Perth-based Westfarmers, once a co-operative, has succeeded in getting the support of the Coles board for its A$22 billion bid for Coles. Coles has 750 supermarkets and advice is flowing to Westfarmers on how it could improve Coles - particularly through improved customer service and employing less school children and more mature workers. There is a co-operative precedent in Singapore.

The Westfarmers bid is subject to a vote by Coles shareholders in October 2007 and the share price for Westfarmers not dropping below a certain level for a period of time which would enable either party to walk away.

NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Limited was established in Singapore in 1973.

Today, FairPrice has about 5000 workers, a retail network of 202 outlets and 470,000 members.

FairPrice's founding mission was to help moderate the cost of living for low-income households in Singapore. Today, that social mission remains.

FairPrice also aims to provide its customers with the best value, quality products and excellent service, while serving the needs of its members, workers and the community, and fulfilling its role as a good corporate citizen.

More than 40% of FairPrice's workforce are in their 50's and 60's. The average age of the staff is 45 years - higher than the national average of 38.8 years.
