Co-ops and the Japanese Crisis

The International Co-operative Alliance has established an update page on the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami. The page will be regularly updated and include any swpecific requests for assistance from Japanese co-operatives. Currently the page includes reports from JA-ZENCHU - National Federation of Agricultural Co-operatives and JF ZENGYOREN - National Federation of Fisheries Co-operatives Associations.

Indian Co-operators Visit Victoria

The Co-operative Federation of Victoria Ltd recently hosted a visit to Melbourne by a group of officials from the National Co-operative & Rural Development Banks Federation of India. Visits were arranged to Murray Goulburn Co-operative Company and Genetics Australia. The co-operation given by MG Chairman Ian MacAulay and Genetics Australia CEO, Ray Johnson, was greatly appreciated.

The Co-operative Experience and Coles

Perth-based Westfarmers, once a co-operative, has succeeded in getting the support of the Coles board for its A$22 billion bid for Coles. Coles has 750 supermarkets and advice is flowing to Westfarmers on how it could improve Coles - particularly through improved customer service and employing less school children and more mature workers. There is a co-operative precedent in Singapore.
