United Farmers Co-operative in Western Australia has announced that it has entered into exclusive discussions with New Zealand's Fertiliser Co-operative Limited to finalise a proposed merger.

UFCC was established in 1992. It is the number three fertiliser distribution business in Western Australia with an estimated 15% share of the WA market. It has 3,633 members.

The merged co-operative would have 30,000 members.

Established in 1977, Ravensdown is the largest supplier of fertiliser in New Zealand with a market share of 50% with fertilser sales of 1.3 million tonnes in FY2007. Ravensdown had operating revenue of NZ$496 million in FY 2007.

It is apparently planned that UFCC's members would become members of the larger co-operative group - unlike the Australian suppliers to the New Zealand Fonterra co-operative.
