Mr. Pratico's comment is about how supplier non-members in Australia are differently from supplier members in New Zealand. Read the news release about Fonterra.

WAFarmers Dairy Section President Tony Pratico is calling for dairy co-operative Fonterra to reconsider their 2007/08 farm gate price increase.

The New Zealand-based dairy exporter this week announced a 30 per cent increase (approx AU10 cents) for NZ dairy farmers. Meanwhile Fonterra's  WA arm held a producer meeting in early May and announced to a 1.6 per cent increase to the farm gate price.

"Milk prices have improved at the retail level due to the world trade price, however very little has come back to dairy farmers," Mr Pratico said.

Mr Pratico also called for other processors to come out with a more realistic figure that reflects that of the world traded price.

"Fair is fair and it is only right that WA farmers get what is equal to world trade prices,"Mr Pratico said.

Statistics from Dairy Australia show that world milk powder and commodity prices are at an all time high. Powder prices have risen from $2,500 per tonne to $4,500 per tonne over the past two years.

"Costs of inputs continue to rise and hay and grain feed costs will not improve until next harvest. And even then that's only if this year is a better harvest than the last."
