Social Business Australia has redesigned its web site. The site's navigation bar inclues About Us, Social Business, News and Events and Tools and Re4sources. Social Business Australia (SBA) was formed in 2009 by a group of like-minded social businesses, to assist Australian social businesses to develop and grow in the competitive environment of the mainstream economy.Sometimes described as social enterprise, social businesses have social objectives at their core, and diverse ownership structures. The businesses we support are different to not-for-profit and for profit types of enterprise - the former do not make profits and the latter use profits to reward capital.

People-Centred Businesses
Sep 22, 2010 - 3:28:52 PM
People-Centred Businesses - Co-operatives, Mutuals and the Idea of Membership is a new book by Johnston Birchall.  The book has individual chapters on consumer-owned retail businesses, insurance providers, housing, public services and utilities and banks. Birchall argues that the banking crisis had little impact on co-operative banks because of their risk-averse business strategy. His book concludes that member-ownership can be both a weakness and a strength; lack of member involvement in governance leads to business failure, while a membership-driven strategy leads to success even in very competitive markets. Published by Palgrave Macmillan, the book is expected to be available in Australia in February 2011 and will retail for $156. The ISBN is 978 - 0-230-21718-8.
