New Zealand and the International Co-operative Alliance's Global 300

New Zealand has six co-operatives in the International Co-operative Alliance's Global 300 list for 2008 - Fonterra Co-operative Group, Foodstuffs (Auckland) Limited, PPCS Limited, Foodstuffs (Wellington) Co-operative Society Ltd, Foodstuffs Ltd (South Island) and Alliance Group Limited.

This is the third consecutive year that the ICA has published the Global 300 list - to highlight the important role co-operative enterprises play in national and international ecobnomies.

Revenue in 2006 was used as the criteria for selection and ranking. The US dollar was used with local currencies converted into USD on the conversion rate at the respective 2006 financial year.

Global 300 2008

Fonterra Co-operative Group is ranked 31 - down from 27 in 2007. Established in 2001, US$8,275 million. Fonterra is one of the top 10 dairy businesses in the world. http://www.fonterra.com

Foodstuffs (Auckland) Limited is ranked 135 - down from 115 in 2007. Established in 1925, the turnover was US$1,883 million in 2006.  Foodstuffs (Wellington) Co-operative society Ltd was ranked 178 - down from 177 in 2007. Established in 1925, the turnover was US$1,340 million in 2006. Foodstuffs Ltd (South Island) was ranked 191 - down from 180 in 2007. Established in 1925, the turnover was US$1,237 million in 2006. The three co-ops comprising the country's biggest grocery distributor with 56% of supermarket sales and New Zealand's third biggest business.http://www.foodstuffs.co.nz

PPCS Limited was ranked 182 - down from 166 in 2007. Established in 1948, the turnover was US$1,326 million in 2006.  A leading New Zealand producer and exporter ofr meat processing 37% of New Zealand's sheep, 35% of beef exports and 54% of venison exports. http://www.ppcs.co.nz

The Alliance Group Limited was ranked 280 - down from 278 in 2007. Established in 1948, the turnover was US$694 million in 2006. The co-operative processes and markets lamb, sheep etc from seven processing sites. http://www.alliance.co.nz
