A new co-operative power deal that could save South Australians up to 24 per cent on their energy costs.

The South Australian Energy Co-operative is a not for profit community group that negotiates competitive energy contracts on behalf of its members.

Launched last year, the SA Energy Co-op has forged an exclusive deal with energy retailer TRUenergy - securing its members savings of up to 24% over three years by packaging discounts of as much as 7% below government approved electricity tariffs with a number of rebates and rewards.

SA Energy Co-op Chairman Glen Thornley said the co-operative’s voluntary directors had contacted all SA energy providers as part of negotiating this offer. “This is an offer that we are proud to present to our members,” he said.

The greatest beneficiaries are likely to be residential consumers whose electricity consumption is lower than the average, and who could potentially reduce their energy costs by almost one quarter. However, even high-volume electricity customers that sign up for the three-year contract could see a reduction of more than eight per cent in their electricity costs.

“Rather than large-volume users receiving the biggest discounts, this plan offers the greatest savings to average consumers who use – and have - the least power. We believe this is the best energy plan currently available to the typical SA home energy consumer,” Mr Thornley said.

This offer is available only to residential customers who are members of the South Australian Energy Co-operative Limited. This includes members who are existing TRUenergy customers.

TRUenergy’s Director Retail, Karen Lowe said the company was very pleased to have been selected as the SA Energy Co-op’s preferred electricity supplier.  “This new partnership with the SA Energy Co-op demonstrates our flexibility and willingness to meet the needs of local energy customers,” she said.

Members will also have the option to apply the cost reduction to offset the cost of buying any of TRUenergy’s government accredited Green Power products.

Mr. Thornley said the electricity market had seen many changes in the past year. “We negotiated to find the best possible deal for consumers both now and into the future,” he said.

“This is just the first step for the Energy Co-op, which will continue to actively advocate for cheaper energy for South Australians. We intend to
keep pushing for lower costs by using the collective negotiation offered by people power. Consumers who join the Energy Co-op can buy into our negotiating power as we represent their interests in affordable energy,“ he said.
