The Secretary General of the United Nations has released a report to the UN General Assembly - Co-operatives in Social Development. The report provides interesting statistics on the contribution of co-operatives to employment.

The International Co-operative Alliance has estimated that co-operatives generate an estimated 100 million jobs worldwide e.g.

  • Canada - co-operatives and credit unions employ over 160,000 people.
  • France - 21,000 co-operatives provide jobs to 700,000 people.
  • Germany - about 8,100 co-operatives provide jobs for 440,000 people
  • Kenya - 250,000 people are employed by co-operatives.
  • Slovakia - 700 co-operatives employ an estimated 75,000 individuals.
  • Colombia - co-operatives employ 109,000 persons and there are 379,000 owner-workers in worker co-operatives.
