By David Griffiths

There are currently 751 incorporated co-operatives in Victoria. Most co-operatives do not employ staff and, therefore, rely on volunteer labour.(p i)
The number of co-operatives on the register appear to have stabilised over the last five years or so, at around 750 co-operatives, after a decline of about 16 per cent over the numbers on the register 5 years earlier. ( p 14)
The reduction from 1997 to 2002 was due to the Registrar canceling the registration of co-operatives that no longer existed. ( p 14)
The percentage of outstanding annual reports is 46.5% (or 53.5% compliant). ( p 17)
The total no of co-operatives as at 31 May 2008 was 734 and may be classified into the following categories: ( p 55)
- Trading with shares 133
- Non trading with shares (Government Guaranteed) 242
- Non Trading with shares 262
- Non Trading without shares 97
Of 308 co-operatives with revenue of A$30,000 or more per annum in any year in the period 2005/08 figures were extracted from aqnnual reports lodged by co-operatives and should be consudere indicative figures: (p 55)
