Of a total of about 1200 members, 818 cast a vote at an extraordinary general meeting on 27 May 2007 - 537 voted yes and 281 voted no.
The committee of Torquay Golf Club supported the sale arguing that it would provide a prosperous and certain future. RACV Executive General Manager Brian Hiscock assured members they would retain independence and access to the golf course.
Opponents of the sale had argued that it was not necessary to sell because of the club's strong financial position and, therefore, there was no need to sell. Opponents argued the committee was putting themselves before the club.
