Cooperatives Australia is the new name for the Co-operative Council of Australia adopted at a meeting on 29 November 2008 at the Garden Terrace, Stamford Plaza, Sydney airport, Mascot, New South Wales.

The meeting comprised delegates from the Co-operative Federation of New South Wales, the Co-operative federation of queensland, the Co-operative Federation of South Australia, the Co-operative Federation of Victoria and Co-operatives WA.  The New Zealand Co-operatives association was an invited guest at the meeting.

Co-operatives Australia is the national body for State Co-operative Federations. It is an unincorporated body with membership by the State Co-operative Federations of NSW; Qld; SA; WA and Victoria.

In co-operative advocacy Co-operatives Australia is apolitical, will not take sides between Federations and co-operatives and while advocating the co-operative option will not become involved in detailed industry specific or social issues unless requested by any industry specific members.
